It has been an interesting summer in my glass studio. I’ve always been a little shy about showing my art and have been quite content to maintain pictures of it on this website. However, this summer I was invited to participate in a juried art show at a nearby gallery featuring “the human figure”. I got real brave and decided to go for it!
In a former career, I enjoyed taking clients to Africa where I marveled at beautiful colors that were particularly attractive to me. I favor oranges, yellows, reds, terra-cotta’s, etc.. I pondered what to draw for this event and settled on a typical African woman dressed in traditional garb using those colors. For this piece of art, I used the multi layered enameling technique that I wrote about in my last blog. This piece is 5 layers of sheet glass. Here are pictures of the process…..and though my art was accepted, alas, she didn’t win a prize. She is listed in my store on this site for purchase. BTY–mwanamke is the Swahili word for “woman”.
